Vancouver 2010

This Olympics is a different Olympics for Canada. This is one where Canadians are standing proud in the streets, at the venues and all over the country with pride. Canadians cheering together with the red and white worn, bursting out in O Canada with strangers in the street. Since when has Canada shown patriotism and interest like this in amateur sport? Are we trying to be more like our neighbours to the south? Who show their patirotism at every chance they can get. Or is this just a fad? Could this just be an In the moment kind of thing or is this something that will stick for generations to come?
The few moments where Canadians have stood tall have mostly been surrounded by hockey. On a few other occasions we could taste the patriotism when Bruny Suirn won the 1996 100m, the mens 4×400m in 1996, Ben Johnsons brief 100m gold in Seoul. Not even the Montreal or Calgary Olympics did Canadians stand as strong as they are right now.
I even saw Oprah with her very own red Vancouver 2010 mittens. Whatever Oprah puts her stamp of approval on automatically becomes the worlds interest. That is the kind of crazy hype that Vancouver 2010 is getting. Never would I thought that it would be getting this kind of hype. I honestly thought that Vancouver 2010 was going to be a failure.
Even celebrities are here watching. I have seen Wayne Gretzky walking down Robson. There have been sightings of Cindy Crawford and Donovan Bailey. Im sure that there are many others here that I haven’t even mentioned because the streets of Vancouver are ridiculously busy with the maple leaf, red and white colors, screaming fans.
I hope that the Canadian patriotism withstands the test of time and carries on into London 2012. The summer Olympics are my true passion and I care dearly for the sport of track and field and all of my friends, teammates and athletes who are vying for a position in 2012. If they have this kind of patriotic backing who knows what they will be able to achieve.
So I am going to suck it up and join the band wagon…. “GO CANADA GO!”
